    Obituary:
Dorchester Allowed Meeting and Shaftesbury and Sherborne Monthly Meeting have suffered a severe loss in the death of Edith Anna Waterfall on February 21, aged 78.

A birthright Friend, she was educated at Redland High School, Bristol, and later obtained a History Honours degree at Lady Margaret Hall, Oxford, and a teacher's diploma at Bristol University. After teaching and lecturing in history in schools in Manchester and Bristol, and in the Teachers' Training Department of Bristol University, she spent two years of graduate study and research at Columbia University, New York City. From 1923 - 41 she was lecturer in Education at the Darlington Training College, and the Leeds Domestic Science Training College.

In 1941 Edith Waterfall and her lifelong friend Miss E. Newcomb, both retired and came to live in Dorchester. Their home was a haven of rest, peace and love, where many came and found joy, comfort and sympathetic understanding. Her membership was then transferred from Bristol and Frenchay to Shaftesbury and Sherborne Monthly Meeting, and from 1945 until her death, she was an elder. She had a lively concern for the whole Society and brought to the service of Elders all the depth of her experience and wider vision.

During the years of her retirement Edith Waterfall's chief interest centered around the small Meeting in Dorchester, which she brought into being and nurtured by her deep spiritual experience. Her ministry was both of a teaching and prophetic nature.

She worked untiringly for many years receiving, packing and dispatching clothing for refugees; a complete record is not available, but from 1953 - 58, 96 sacks of clothing were sent off by her from her Dorchester home to the Oxford Committee for Famine Relief.

Edith Waterfall loved the birds and the flowers, and all the beauties of nature were a constant joy to her. A walk with her in the country brought a rich experience of God. She had a great capacity for friendship and a fine sensitivity to the needs of other, sharing the joys and sorrows of all with whom she came in touch. She made people feel that they mattered intensely to her, and even in the most casual contact gave herself freely. She seemed to penetrate beneath the human imperfections to the Christ-like qualities within.
