    Milit-Beg:
    Ernest joined the Leicestershire Regiment on the 2 July 1890 as a Private. His Army no was 2822. On joining up Ernest's height was 5ft 5 inches, weight 118 lbs, with a chest of 35 inches. He had a fresh complexion, grey eyes and red hair and there were no distinctive marks.

    On the 8th September Ernest was promoted to the rank of Corporal. Then on the 6th May 1893 he was promoted to Lt Sergeant, and on the 18th May 1894 he was again promoted to Sergeant.

    On the 6th November 1896 Ernest was awaiting trial for Drunkeness, and on the 14th November 1896, he was convicted and his punishment was demotion back down to Private.

    On the 30th June 1897 Ernest was transffered to 1st Class Army Reserve, but was recalled to Army Servive on the 26 December 1899 as a Private. On the 19th january 1901 he was appointed Lance Corporal.

    Between the 7th February 1900 and the 20th June 1902 Ernest was stationed in Egypt.

    When Ernest ended his Army career, in 1902 he was back down to the rank of Private.

    Milit-Beg:
    During the First World War Ernest joined the R.A.F. on the 1st June 1915, although his actual entry in the R.A.F. does not commence until the 18th May 1918. His official number was 185675 and he was a Clerk.

    On his R.A.F. papers he names his next of kin as Jane Houston and she is listed as his unmarried wife and is living at 240 Gladston Street, Nottingham
