    Obituary:
In the death of Arnold Waterfall on May 7, Settle Monthly Meeting and Friends generally have lost a valuable member. Born in 1914, brought up in the family home over the bookshop in Sheep Street, Skipton, and educated at Ackworth, he was a Quaker all his life. He left Ackworth in 1930, right in the middle of the slump years and went straight into the family shop to learn the business he was eventually to manage, being joined by his brother Sydney in 1946. The brothers co-operated well and as partners developed the shop into a thriving and very friendly concern.

Arnold married Phyllis Keegan in 1939 and after a short period in Skipton, set up in the cottage attached to the old meeting house in Airton; this was to be their home for over twenty-five years, and here an allowed meeting developed during the war years. Part of the premises was used as a hostel for evacuees from Liverpool; Arnold and Phyllis were wardens, working with Friends Relief. It was here that they made it their concern to intriduce country ways to children who had never left the city.

The ties of business were considerable, but even so, Arnold undertook a variety of tasks for Friends including membership of Meeting for Sufferings for nine years. Travelling was not as good then as now and the trip to London and back took from 2 am to midnight, getting some sleep on the way south. Also he was clerk to a joint Trust Funds Committee for Brighouse, Leeds and Settle Monthly Meetings, in which capacity he visisted Meetings Houses and Burial Grounds extensivley; in the early 80s he was a member of Quaker World Relations Committee and before that of the North West 1652 Committee.

Outside Friends work, his intrests were wide and in many cases deep. In philately, his intrest in Tibetan stamps led him to write a number of publications and to recieve world wide recognition. The sport of caving owes much to him; as one of the founders and secretary for many years of the Craven Pot Hole Club, he published Pennine Underground, a book that has become the "Bible" of cavers in the area. More than this, he helped to establish the Cave Rescue Organistation, a body that has saved many lives, and of which he was a keen supporter.

Arnold's contribution lay in the practical help that he gave in the areas of life that he touched and the friendly way he gave it.

    Notes:

    Event-Misc:
Hannah Maria Waterfall was the youngest daughter of George and Ann Cartwright, and was born at Lilling in the year 1842. She was a dutiful and obedient child, loving and affectionate to her parents, and was fond of reading, choosing such books as were most likely to improve her mind. She was also when quite young, very fond of learning poetry mostly of a serious kind, which she would often repeat after retiring to rest, to those who shared her room. After leaving Ackworth, where she was at school three years, she lived with her parents at Airton, and while in her teens commenced bible class for young women, which she continued until her marriage. This class was it is believed, made a blessing to several of the young people, to one in particular who died when about twenty-one years of age, and of whom it could emphatically be said she died happy in Jesus. Many of the others retain a very affectionate remembrance of their dear teacher, and at her funeral begged to be allowed to carry her remains to their last resting place.

In 1867 she was married to Arthur Waterfall, to whom she was a true help mate, always encouraging him to yield obedience to the pointings of duty. To her children, of whom she had six, she was a most loving and affectionate mother, endeavoring to train them in nurture and admonition of the Lord. Though not of strong health and feeling the burden of home cares, she still endeavored to benefit her neighbours by reading to some at their homes, and inviting others to her own for the same purpose. About two years before her death, she first spoke in the meeting to which she belonged and was afterwards unfrequently engaged very acceptably in this service. She lived very hear to her saviour, and greatly desired that those around her should do so too, frequently praying for all at the morning and evening readings, asking for daily and hourly guidance.

Her health during the last year of her life became more delicate, and consumption was feared. Various remedies were tried, but in vain; and she peacefully breathed her last on the 20th of the First month, at the age of 34.

Of a mild and gentle disposition, sanctified by Divine grace, it was evident she had become possessed of "the ornament of a meek and quiet spirit, which is in sight of God of great price". While her loss is deeply felt by her family and friends and in the small meeting of which she was a member, the precious consolation is also felt, that the event which has clothed so many heart with sorrow.....
