    Sir (Frederick) Maurice Drake DFC, High Court judge, died on 6 April 2014, aged 91. He was educated at St George's School, Harpenden, and, after war service as an RAF navigator, during which he was awarded the DFC, Exeter College, Oxford, where he read Jurisprudence, graduating in 1948. He was called to the bar by Lincoln's Inn in 1950, developing a busy common law practice, specialising especially in libel, and taking silk in 1968. He was deputy chairman of the Bedfordshire Quarter Sessions from 1966 to 1971, a recorder of the Crown Court from 1972 to 1978, and a judge of the High Court of Justice (Queen's Bench Division) from 1978 to 1995. From 1991 to 1995 he was the High Court's principal libel judge. He was known as a barrister for his eloquence and as a judge for his humour. He was survived by his wife May and their five children.

    Obituary:
    Mr William Duncan Waterfall, C.B.E, who was the Director of Savings at the General Post Office from 1944 to 1951, died yesterday at the age of 80.

    Waterfall succeeded Sir Leon Simon in 1944 at a time when there was a great increase in savings. High war-time earnings, the national savings campaign, a restrictions on spending persuaded people to save their surplus small change. At the peak in 1946, Waterfall and his department were responsible for £1.982 million of deposits and interest.

    Waterfall was educated at Manchester Grammer School and Oxford. He entered the civil service through the higher division examination in 1913, and joined what was then the secretary's office of thePost Office, where he served until 1936. After working on the schemes for introducing regionalization, he became deputy regional director of London telecommunications region, and in 1939 went to Manchester to be first deputy director and then directr of the north-west region.
